October happenings

The monthly meeting was held on Monday 23rd October. The speaker was Dr Brian Schneider who gave a fascinating talk entitled ‘Murder, Madness and the OED’ [A history of dictionaries and the OED. In particular  Sir James Murray who was the primary editor of the OED) from 1879 until his death; and and one of the largest contributors to the OED,  Dr. W. C. Minor, who was held in a lunatic asylum for murder during the time of his contribution to the OED]

Thursday Book Club read “Knowledge of Angels” by June Paton Walsh and the Monday Book Club is reading “H is for Hawk” by Helen Macdonald

5 Disley Detectives solved the murder of Jimmy Johnson, nightclub owner, in Manchester.  (Manhunt is a murder-mystery event – see website manhuntmanchester) They got a little soggy but those grey cells still worked! They even met Hercule Poirot!

An evening of Drawing

Nine members gathered in the Community Centre to learn some basic drawing skills from the wonderfully talented Yvonne.

We learnt basic shading, dotting, stippling, dashing, cross hatching, contour hatching, scumbling and how to draw a 3-D object

We ended up copying a Van Gogh using the techniques we had just learnt – with varying results!

What we did in July

July Meeting

The speaker at July’s meeting was Sue Fraser-Thompson talking about ‘Preventative Fitness for Women’. Sue is the Principal Practitioner at Fountain Square Physiotherapy and gave an interesting and engaging talk with lots of audience participation!

We also had a session of sampling jams, chutneys and lots (and lots) of cakes, in order to vote on which we felt should be part of our Disley Show entry. We also voted on 2 pictures.

The Poppy Project

Several members met for an evening of cutting out and sewing more leaves for our poppy project. We made another 30 leaves and lots of felt and embroidery thread was taken away for leaf making at home!

Wigs’n’Wellies

Four members headed over to the Linnet Clough campsite for the WI Wigs and Wellies Camp last weekend. Had a great time doing henna tattoos, drinking elderflower champagne, listening to talks and making lots of leaves for our poppy project with help from lots of other lovely WI ladies

Thanks so much to the organisers for a great time!  It was wonderful to meet so many different people 🙂
